The story of Dr. Ho Kai Cheong
A visionary herbalist dedicated to the wellbeing of his community

Ho Yan Hor Tea:
Healing for Everyone

In 1941, Dr. Ho Kai Cheong formulated a targeted herbal remedy that quickly grew into one of Ipoh’s most trusted Chinese herbal teas. Created from a special blend of traditional herbs, Ho Yan Hor offered natural relief and gentle healing for everyone. For over 85 years, it has remained a symbol of care, health, and heritage.

A Heart to Serve,
Hands to Help

Driven by a duty to serve his community, Dr. Ho Kai Cheong crafted Ho Yan Hor to treat common colds, fevers, and ailments caused by heatiness.

During the tin mining boom in the Kinta Valley, immigrant laborers faced grueling work in harsh weather. Unable to afford missed workdays due to illness, many turned to Ho Yan Hor as an affordable way to prevent and treat symptoms, keeping them healthy and resilient.

Resilience Through Adversity

Dr. Ho believed that perseverance would always pave the way to success. Overcoming war, poverty, and hardship, he turned life’s challenges into stepping stones. From his humble beginnings as a shop assistant, soldier, and farmer to becoming a respected Chinese physician, Dr. Ho’s journey reflects a spirit of versatility, determination, and lifelong dedication.

From Bicycle
to Global Brand

While his wife managed the retail shop, Dr. Ho traveled across the entire Malay Peninsula by bicycle to promote his herbal tea. His tireless efforts eventually allowed him to upgrade to a Morris Minor in 1948, followed by a Fordson Light Van in 1951—the iconic Ho Yan Hor Marketing Van.

By 1954, production expanded to a dedicated factory on Kuala Kangsar Road in Ipoh. Ho Yan Hor soon gained recognition across Singapore and Thailand, leading to its first overseas branch in Hong Kong in 1960. By the 1970s, the brand had expanded internationally, reaching markets in the United Kingdom, the United States, and New Zealand.
